WHY OPEN MEAL?

SMALL BUSINESS ADVOCATES

Open meal only partners with family-owned restaurants so they can continue to employ local people, support the local economy, foster community building, and maintain local culture, while also feeding those in need.

ALLIES FOR ASIANS

“Stricken by xenophobia, Oakland and San Francisco’s Chinatown restaurants are reporting that their businesses have declined by 50% or more. On top of this hardship, there has also been a dramatic increase in racial discrimination and attacks on the Asian community. Now more than ever, the Asian American community is at risk and incredibly vulnerable to being subjected to discrimination, hate crimes, and harassment.”

What does generosity mean to you?

“Generosity to me is giving from the heart rather than expecting a reward out of it. There's something very heartwarming about being able to give back to the community when given the opportunity, and it's something that you can't experience with money.”

Do you celebrate Chinese/Lunar New Year? If yes, what traditions do you enjoy most?

“Chinese New Years looks different for everyone, but we always celebrate by having hot pot together! I’ve always loved seeing everyone eating, and we would have a huge assortment of meats and vegetables. There is something about food that brings others together and enjoying each other’s company.”

Do you celebrate Chinese/Lunar New Year? If yes, what traditions do you enjoy most?

“Yes!! Since I was little, LNY was the holiday that I looked forward to the most. Growing up in a primarily Caucasian community, the holiday felt special and connected me to a community that wasn't necessarily physically present. One of my favorite traditions is giving my sincere wishes of health and happiness to the people around me. It's not something that we normally think about or do every day, so this small act feels very significant.”

What inspired your sticker design?

“I was originally going to do a boba sticker only, but I wanted to incorporate Lunar New Year into it!  thought it would be cute if this year’s animal (the ox) was drinking the boba!”

What does generosity mean to you?

“Generosity is the action of giving when you have the ability to give. Personally I am very privileged. I have the privilege of being able to come to a home that has electricity everyday and be able to eat everyday. Some people don’t have the same privilege as I do and I think it’s important to give when you’re able to. The significance of generosity is in the intentions behind what you’re giving rather than the actual object you’re giving.”
